Gretel

…so the father sought a rich wife and mother for his children.

with her thread to home
and her chicken bone fingers;
all she ever wanted was
to be seen for who she was

by her father
who wanted not her,
but some pounding rhythm
on the planked bed of straw
and worn ticking
with the Stepmother.
Well, now he knows

what a daughter will do
to gain her father’s attention.
Smacking her lips,
licking her fingers,
tasting sugared houses
and roasted witches,
she waits with wet
fingers and crystal-rimed mouth
for daddy

I have attended several universities (University of Texas, University of St. Thomas, University of Houston [totalling about 1000 hours])but never graduated -- I consider myself in post-graduate studies of life. I am a writer, mother, teacher, bookkeeper, gardener, quilter, recorder player, god seeker, dog lover, cat tolerator and student of the odd. I was born in 1951. I have been published in The Inkling (an English Department Magazine of Tomball College, Tomball, TX) three times.
