Mary Ellen Ugactz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York of Irish and Russian-American parents. Her parents divorced when she was just a
toddler. She graduated from Columbia University in 1995 with a degree in Creating Writing/Literature. She is married with two beautiful boys, David and Dillon. "I write because words are constantly swimming in my mind." Poets most influenced by: Jane Kenyon and Donald Hall.

I was born in 1960 in a place called Jersey City. My family was typically blue collar working class, and horrified to discover that their youngest girl had a bend toward the literary.I spent half my school life educated by nuns, the other half in the public school system fearing for my very life. (Public school children are none too fond of the literary either...or the literate for that matter.
I grew up. Attended college at Rowan University in South Jersey (then known as Glassboro) met my husband and wrote for several years before marrying. I have a child named Desiree who is far more clever than I, even at nine, and was delighted to discover that the Web, rather than being the death of poetry, seems to have given it fresh life. I am now 40--- and am looking foward to the second half of living...when I can be a happy old woman who wears purple, and silly hats, and really could give a damn less what people think of her version of personal bliss.

My journey in poetry began early, with the Greek and Romantic poets and Dylan Thomas. That journey has continued throughout my life, an odyssey of self-exploration and communication, the playful discipline of the music of language. When I was 49, my first poetry collection, Earth Lessons, was published by Bellowing Ark Press. The book's publication initiated a new exploration, the dialogue between writer and reader. When I am not writing and reading poetry, I am probably walking with my dogs and thinking about writing. I value the friendships with fellow poets I have made through the Internet. I believe a rich future for poetry lies in this realm.
