The Art & Poetry of Anne Fraser

View of the Fields

I watch the sun rise over
newly turned fields and a narrow garden
near the house where lettuce,
carrot tops and scarlet wildflowers
will shoot up with the first sowing.

Morning fog lifts a little
from the edges of the fields;
a chestnut mare crosses slowly
toward comfort of the barn.
She is seen to lean a little forward
in each step, drawing
against her memories of the plough.

A head bowed beneath orange light;
each breath puffs small clouds of
crystal from flared nostrils; her steps
follow the furrows, straight and deep,
engraving hoof prints into the yearly
made and unmade fields.
This - her single purpose.

Indiscretion

A young woman taken
by fine speech and pretty
promises, smooth and plump
beneath feather pillows.

You were not surprised -he peeled
the sheets and then his words.
I stupid, blinded by his charm and failed
to heed the wisdom of your counsel.

Small crow, now change my form.
Together we will gather
all that shines and soon forget
my previous dysfunction.
