The Poetry Book Society

T S Eliot founded the Poetry Book Society in 1953 in order to promote a love and understanding of contemporary poetry. The PBS is now a unique membership organisation which exists to keep people all over the world up to date with the best new English language poetry being published in the UK and Ireland today. The PBS is also a specialist book club and a not-for-profit registered charity funded by the Arts Council of England.

The Poetry Society

An arts charity established in 1909 which helps 'poets and poetry thrive'. It publishes the widely acclaimed magazine Poetry Review and essential teaching resources such as The Poetry Book for Primary Schools. There is an active education department which separately runs Poetry Prescription, the Critical Service. With a National lottery grant for the Poetry Places scheme the Poetry Society has put poetry into the public arena with Poets in Residence and poetry placements. It runs the National Poetry Competition (1st prize £5000) and the Young National poetry Competition and promotes poetry on National Poetry Day. It runs The Poetry Cafe in Covent Garden, London which any member can enter free having an international membership with no joining criteria. It provides advice to The Arts Council of England about poetry issues like choosing the Poet Laureate and to our members about getting published and free information packs for general enquiries. But you don't have to live in the UK to enjoy the many benefits of membership.
