Elementary
This is the breeze, the freshening wind
that precedes the hurricane;
This is the spark that signals
the conflagration to come;
This is the spatter of rain
that tattles on the impending tempest;
Here, too, is the tumbling rock,
the harbinger of avalanche.
Windstorm, firestorm, tsunami, earthquake:
All the turbulences of earth and heaven
Converge between two souls,
Awaiting their mating.
Then, finally, celestial alleluias:
Rock, dropping into the sea;
He penetrates her, and gladly, she enfolds him.
They roll together, laughing, earth and ocean
In joyful confluence and consummation.
