Moonbeams

This place is not a place I know, or even one I like,
The spirits here are so constrained, hiding from the light;
Natures hidden, convoluted, like snakes prepared to strike.

The sands of time are cold and hard, they do eat at my soul.
They've scarred the beauty this place once held and - worse -
They carried you from me, and from you the fire they stole.

You were a dark-haired Indian Princess,
When I had wings and sailed on drafts of air.
The braves sang of your burning beauty,
While in small hearts my claws begot despair.

I was the great gray wolf howling at the moon,
When you were a wild mare feeding on lush grasses.
Fur and hunger, fang and truth - the earth was mine,
While you ran inviolate - faster than the wind's caprices.

You were a raging mountain river fed by virgin snow,
When I was slopes of tree and rock reaching skyward.
You brought life and touched every nook which did allow it,
My joy was birthing you on harsh slopes where you endeavored.

I was stardust when you touched me, from a distant galaxy,
You were the pristine moonbeam that caressed my very soul.
It was in your light and love that I learned to grow and care,
We discovered passion and flight - existence we extolled.

Forever free to find our deepest truth, our highest destiny;
Yet bound like fire is to the sun in searing, soulful harmony.
When? When did you forget that you were part of me?

I am still the eagle and the wolf - the mountain and the dust.
And when I gaze into the moon I see traces of you there.
You fell away, you broke the bond - my heart you left to rust.

I dream of angels in the night, of moonbeams I once touched.
Now blood and tears, it matters not - I am what I once was.
My dreams last forever, though new soul mates you have clutched.

Simple Needs

I have no need of servants, my needs are simple and few,
The trappings of society, for the most part, I eschew.
So when you look into my eyes, and see the longing there,
Understand the need you sense is not one that ensnares.

I don't need a woman to cook for me or clean,
I don't need a nursemaid, or someone to demean.
I don't need a waitress, or a prop upon my arm,
I don't need a socialite, full of wit and charm.

I've seen your eyes, and felt your heart; I've heard your spirit roar,
There's magic in your soul that I've seen here before.
You've sisters in the forests, and sisters in the air,
I know because I've ran with them, I smell them in your hair.

When you look into your lover's eyes, do they burn for you?
Do they see beyond your flesh and hunger for that too?
When they taste your sweating body, do they go insane?
Do they give themselves completely - can you ascertain?

In you the fire that burns forever is as bright as it can be;
You stole my heart, you are my soul, you move alluringly.
I need to feel you feel my love; I must placate this thirst,
Just as the night turns into day, in you I'll be immersed.

When you look into your lover's eyes, do they rage for you?
Does their love burn like red-hot steel - or a slightly lesser hue?
Can they feel your mighty spirit flying through the air;
Do they see the blissful goddess - or do they even care?

Can you remember when we ran through fields, and woods and streams;
How I pledged my life and love to you, under the lustrous moonbeams?
You are me and I am you, forever we're entwined;
God touched you, and you touched me; and earth and stars combined...

Heaven's Child

Most folks will plainly tell you that life is shades of gray,
For me and mine I'll disagree, it simply ain't that way...
My father was the demon's seed, my mother was the wind,
When I was spat out in the world I spat right back again.

I was weaned on bitter blood, from the black heart of the beast,
When I was six months old or so, I left and headed east;
I roamed the sand of the Southwest with coyotes and with wolves,
Feeding on man's lost children and fine Kentucky bourbon.

I found myself in Texas, cause I had bigger dreams,
There I took up farming in the scorched and barren air.
I grew myself tornadoes, mighty cyclones by the score,
And sold ‘em to the devil - he kept coming back for more.

Pretty soon the sky was filled with lightning and with smoke,
The land the people had to leave if they didn't want to croak.
Once more I headed east with my sights set ever higher,
Until I drifted into the fertile fields of a gentle Carolina.

Now I had heard there was a God who gave his only Son,
To offer people some respite from their wretched misery.
But the tallest man can't reach the stars - even the closest one,
So this seemed quite a stretch for me, a lonely aberration.

But then my eyes they fell upon a flower from earth's garden,
I looked at her with fine-tuned hatred, as I was apt to do.
With love she looked right through it, to a place I didn't know,
She found a heart inside of me and then set it all aglow.

I tried to shield my virgin soul, but it melted in her warm rain,
I was mighty among men, but I fought heaven's child in vain.
She taught me of a time before - when I lived before I breathed,
She showed me what the fire meant, and why my spirit seethed.
Now I don't know that many things, but still there is no gray,
I never met the One called God, but His gifts I won't downplay;
Cause the greatest gift I ever got was an angel here on earth,
And now my fire belongs to her, in her I found rebirth.

Love and Candlelight

I rose at midnight, to find my sun aglow;
My heart reached out to touch your hand -
It's only apropos.
You are my first thought and my last,
As I stumble through this absurd world;
Words, my sweet repast.

The scars of life would mean naught to me
If I could cleave to you unabashedly.
I know that time has but two faces,
One with you, and one without;
In each my spirit transgresses.

I hunger to share my world with you,
Though it is simple and poor, somewhat askew.
I offer up my lonely heart and empty soul;
Common both - and yet you make them sing and soar.
You make me whole.

Without you, I see the laughter of children and clowns;
But with you - I feel it, and the love that therein abounds.
Without you, I see dimly the sun, the birds and grasses;
With you, there is searing heat, sultry song and underfoot
Lush ambiences.

Take me within your warm body and your passionate light.
Create a child with me in the space that is both of us
With love and candlelight.
My back is stalwart; your heart stronger still,
Together we will forge an earth of finer fabric,
Into our child our souls will be distilled.

Come with me in the midnight hour, listen for the music
Born in the time before our feeble memory,
For two hearts alone it plays angelic.
Bask with me in the beautiful light of the moon;
Feel its power and its pull, and yet without the sun,
No light would be bestrewn.

So be my sun, I'll be your moon.
Live with me beneath the stars, together;
To earthly darts our love, our child, will be immune...

Total Eclipse of the Soul, or The Motorcycle Song

The Epiphany is over - it left no lasting gifts,
Too soon came Ash Wednesday;
The penitence begun...

I'd come down to the crossroads
There at Highway 49.
Either coming home or leaving,
It's all the same damn thing.

The stars are sparkling above me,
The chrome sparkling there beneath.
But I only want the light of the moon;
It's the only light seek.

The air is warm for this time of year,
My engine warmer still,
The heat rises up over my legs,
Till I taste it in my mouth.

Once filled by the light of the moon,
Now it's nowhere to be found.
Sitting at the edge of the highway,
Don't matter which way I go.

If you have no reason left to die for,
There's no reason left to live.
That's the business of mankind -
The souls of our dear friends.

I start up furious as if it mattered -
Turning hard into the night.
The motor screams as I hit second,
The back springs do compress.
The rear tire spins, the front one lifts
And against the dark I press...

The air turns cold as did the world,
I remember familiar embrace.
The blackness rushes into the void
Left by her eyes, her face...

Passing cars all through the night,
More souls in their plight;
Blinded by the lights that aren't,
Sweet lies, the siren's song...

A flash of blue in rear view mirror,
Cold and spinning wild.
The game of old comes back to me,
I played it as a child.

Highway man behind me,
I hold his steady gaze.
The Reaper up ahead,
Stalking children in the night.

The speed comes on so easy,
To the fire that burns alone.
The center line suicide squeeze,
Honesty at last...

120 comes and goes, then 125,
The blue begins to fade.
Slamming hard into reflectors,
Brings a cold hard-on...

On my forehead the trace of ashes,
The mark of the cross does burn.
On my back, the mark of the beast;
The battle of the soul is almost done.

I only wanted for you to exist -
I only wanted you to stay.
You said that we were soul mates,
I found heaven in your eyes...

You were afraid to test your heart,
To reach into the flames.
If you get too close to heaven,
You know it's gonna burn.

The light of the sun - it feeds our body;
But the light of the moon feeds our soul.
And if I can never see the moon again,
It don't matter which way I go.
And if you don't mean the things you said,
You're willing slave to the illusion.

If you have no reason left to die for,
There's no reason left to live.
That's the business of mankind -
The souls of our dear friends.

A ring of fire begins ascent in what should be
Fresh dawn sky.
The bike is crying a high pitched wail,
She always knew my soul.
The needle's stuck out past 150,
There's nowhere left to go.

The heavens are no longer right,
The worlds are misaligned.
I raise my eyes to see my moon,
Just one last time, I pray.
One kiss of light, one touch of love,
Remembrance of humanity.
But all I see is the absence of light,
Where brilliance there once was.

Sun and moon have joined together;
But that can never be, that can never be.
I raise my fists, and scream my song,
And merge into the flames.

Something Burning

There's something burning, burning down inside of me,
There's something churning, that's got to be set free,
You know that I want you, more than I want to live,
You know that I need it, take all I've got to give.

There's a fire in your eyes, how deep does it burn?
There's a fire in my heart, I can't act unconcerned.
I feel a furious hunger, no other can satisfy,
So feed me your body, baby. Shall I clarify?

I want to taste you, baby, I want to drink your wine,
I want to feel your body, that's looking oh so fine,
I want to nibble on your neck, and work down to your toes,
Open up and let me in until your fuse box blows...

I want to bite you in places, you didn't know you had,
I want to make you so hot, you'll know that you've been bad.
I want to turn up your thermostat, till you're soaking wet,
When you're done shaking, baby, you never will forget.

This love that consumes me, this love that sanctifies,
It grew in your garden, I found it in your eyes.
Can't you see it, baby; we've lived our lives in chains,
Take a chance with me, honey, let's see what fate ordains.

There's something burning, burning down inside of me,
There's something churning, that's got to be set free,
You know that I want you, more than I want to live,
You know I need it, take all I've got to give.

Light of Darkness

I read a poem once, in the days before my darkness,
It read "The moon is the mother of pathos and pity."
The words were foreign to me, cognizance lost...

I looked at the moon and saw fire, heart beating fast,
Standing in darkness and filled by the heat of the sun;
Reflection of souls, passion of spirit, hope held high...

It was the time when I held you tightly in the night,
Your breath was mine, your beauty kept me warm.
An angel in the darkness you flew between my reason,
As in each other's arms we found refuge from the storm.

You never knew that as you slept, as I kept silent watch,
Tears of gratitude often fell, like drops of soft warm rain.
Shafts of moonbeam on silken hair, golden child of God,
Your heartbeat plays in my soul, heaven's faint refrain.

I read a poem once, in the days before my darkness,
It read "The moon is the mother of pathos and pity."
Such a price for understanding, cold mother of the night,
Angels and dreams lost far too soon in quiet agony...
