To my Lady
As you passed my secret pool
Where flowers rich in beauty flare
I raised my hand and called to you
And asked if you would join me there.
Perhaps together we could feast
Upon the lotus of regret?
"No!" You laughed, and caught my hand,
"No time to think of those. Not yet!"
Yet their scent clothed my mind in comfort.
I gathered them to me in sheaves.
For so long they'd been all I'd known
I found I couldn't quite believe
I could discard these fears I'd cherished
When they'd always been my friends -
You saw, and smiled, and understood
I'd need your help to start again.
Quick as silver raced you onwards.
I could but stand. I couldn't run.
I watched you merging with the sunset.
Weighed down by all I had become
I wore the night as shroud and sat,
Bewildered, empty and alone
And took the flowers from my coat
And found each of them turned to stone.
Though my voice was sheathed in silence
I should have known you'd hear my cry
For you came and put your arms around me.
Your touch soft as butterfly
Lifting me free from my sorrow,
So together we can rise
Companions to the fledgeling dawn
Borne with its light through the skies.
