Alchemy

Once I made a promise
that I would consign a kiss to memory.

With the best of intentions
I thought I would be able to recall it and savor it,
and then tuck it back until another day.
For a while I managed to keep my promise.
I would recall the memory,
a smile would come,
and with a deep sighI would let it go.

But the memory of that kiss
began to scorch my heart.
Soon, when I tried to let
the memory live for a moment,
it began to enter my body.
My lips would tremble slightly
with the thought of that kiss.
It was frightening to think what one kiss could do.

It was only later that I realized
that the person who made the promise
was not the same person who had the memory.
The memory of that kiss
had transformed my heart,
just as alchemists turned
base metal into pure gold.
